FAQ about solar power in Florida
Straight answers to the questions Panhandle homeowners ask most about cost, installation, roofs and hurricanes, batteries, repair and maintenance. Written by the crew that installs and services these systems.
Costs & financing
How much does solar cost in the Florida Panhandle?
Most homes land around $3.25 per watt installed. A typical 6–12 kW residential system therefore runs roughly $19,500–$39,000 before any incentives. Your written quote after a free site survey gives exact figures for your roof.
Is solar worth it in Florida?
For most homeowners with a sound roof and reasonable sun, yes. You swap a utility bill that keeps rising for a fixed payment that ends. Once the system is paid off, what it produces is free for the rest of its warranty life.
What financing is available?
Non-collateral solar loans, which put no lien on your home. Payments can often be set at or below your current electric bill. We show both numbers side by side so the comparison is honest.
Are there tax credits or incentives?
Incentives change, so we confirm what currently applies when we prepare your quote rather than promising figures on a web page. Our quotes show the cost before any incentives, so nothing depends on one that might go away.
How long does solar take to pay for itself?
It depends on your bill, roof and financing, but in the Panhandle it typically falls well inside the 25-year panel warranty. Our solar calculator gives a quick estimate, and the site survey gives the real one.

Installation
How long does a solar installation take?
One to three days on site for most homes. End to end, including survey, engineering, permits, install, inspection and utility permission to operate, usually takes four to eight weeks. Most of that is waiting on county and utility turnaround.
Who handles permits and utility paperwork?
We do, all of it: installation drawings, the permit package, the notice of commencement, the utility interconnection application, and meeting the inspector on site.
How big a system do I need?
That depends on your usage, not your roof size. We start from twelve months of bills, work out your base load, then size the system to the share of your bill you want to cover. Most Panhandle homes land between 6 and 12 kW.
Can solar go on a metal roof?
Yes. Standing-seam metal is often the best roof for solar, because clamp-on mounts need no roof penetrations at all. 5V and corrugated metal work too, with the correct gasketed hardware.
Do you install for businesses?
Yes: commercial, agricultural and multi-building properties as well as homes.

Roofs, storms & hurricanes
Should I replace my roof before going solar?
If your shingles are past roughly 12–15 years, yes. Removing and reinstalling an array later costs real money, and doing the roof first avoids it. We assess remaining roof life during the survey.
Do solar panels survive hurricanes?
Properly attached arrays are engineered for Florida wind loads and routinely come through storms intact. When systems fail, it's usually because of minimum-spec attachments and flashing, which is why we engineer and document ours.
Will solar panels cause roof leaks?
Not if every penetration is correctly flashed and sealed. Most leaks we find on inherited systems trace back to sealant-only mounts. If an old install is leaking, we can pull panels so a roofer can repair, then reinstall.
Does salt air damage panels?
The panels themselves hold up well. What suffers is cheap hardware and dirty glass. Near the coast we use corrosion-rated fasteners and recommend more frequent cleaning.
Can you inspect my system after a storm?
Yes. Post-storm inspections cover structure and electrics and come with a written report for your insurer.

Batteries & backup power
Will solar panels work during a power outage?
Not on their own. A grid-tied system without storage shuts down in an outage for lineworker safety. To keep power on, you need battery storage or a generator inlet.
How much does a battery cost?
Powerwall 3 runs about $15,000 installed for the first battery and $12,000 for each additional one. Other battery types are available and sometimes suit a smaller backup goal better.
Can a battery run my air conditioning?
It can, but central AC is the heaviest load in the house and drains a single battery quickly. Whole-home cooling through an outage usually needs more than one unit.
Battery or generator: which is better?
They do different jobs. A generator inlet is cheaper and runs as long as you have fuel, but it's manual and noisy. A battery is silent, switches on automatically and recharges from your roof. Many Panhandle homes have both.
Can you add a battery to my existing system?
Usually, yes, including systems we didn't install. We check compatibility with your inverter and main panel first.

Service, repair & maintenance
Can you repair a system another company installed?
Yes. Any brand, any age. Taking on systems left behind by closed installers is a large part of our work. Since 2022, we have a 100% repair rate.
My installer went out of business. Is my warranty gone?
Usually not. Manufacturer warranties on panels, inverters and batteries stay with the equipment. We work out what's still covered and pursue the claim for you.
What does a service call cost?
We tell you the service-call cost on the phone before we drive out, and it doesn't change when we arrive. Repairs are quoted separately and you approve them first.
Do I need to be home?
No, the large majority of work is accomplished outside. If we are changing a part that is sent to you, we will need access to it while you are away. We will put our findings on your invoice and call you if you wish.
How do I know my system isn't working properly?
Look for a power bill creeping back up, a monitoring app showing zero, an inverter warning light, or one section of the array producing less than the rest. If you see any of these, call us.
How often should panels be cleaned?
Once a year suits most Panhandle homes. More often under pines, near dusty fields, or within about a mile of salt water. MSM Solar does not clean panels; see our affiliates page for trusted local panel cleaners.
What are squirrel guards?
Mesh barriers fitted around the edge of the array. They stop squirrels and birds nesting under the panels and chewing the wiring.
